With the irradiation of dibromomaleic anhydride and <I>N</I>-phenylpyrrole, photosubstitution and photocyclization took place in succession to yield pyrrolo[1,2-a]quinoline-4,5-dicarboxylic anhydride as the final product. On the basis of energy-transfer experiments, both of the reactions were concluded to proceed <I>via</I> triplet species. Solvent effects were carefully examined and the presence of polar reaction intermediates was proposed to account for the solvent-dependent deactivation process.
