• The photolysis of 3,4-bis(hydroxydiphenylmethyl)cyclobut-3-ene-1,2-dione (<B>1</B>) in benzene afforded 4,4,8,8-tetraphenyl-3,7-dioxabicyclo[3.3.0]octane-2,6-dione (<B>3</B>) in an 80% yield. The photolysis of <B>1</B> in MeOH afforded 4,4,8,8-tetraphenyl-3,7-dioxabicyclo[3.3.0]oct-1(<B>5</B>)-ene-2,6-dione (<B>4</B>), 4-methoxycarbonyl-3,3-diphenyl-5-diphenylmethylene-2-oxacyclopentan-1-one (<B>5</B>), and 4-carboxy-3,3-diphenyl-5-diphenylmethyl-2-oxacyclopent-4-en-1-one (<B>6</B>), in 3, 8, and 22% yields respectively. The mechanisms of the formation of the <B>5</B> and <B>6</B> are discussed. The photolysis of 3-hydroxydiphenylmethyl-4-diphenylmethoxymethylcyclobut-3-ene-1,2-dione (<B>14</B>) and 3,4-bis(diphenylmethyl)cyclobut-3-ene-1,2-dione (<B>18</B>) was also investigated.
