The irradiation of 1-phenyl-1,2-propanedione and olefins, such as 2,3-dimethyl-2-butene and α-methylstyrene, in benzene gives mainly oxetanes, in sharp contrast to the results obtained from the photoaddition of biacetyl to these olefins. The differences between these results are discussed in terms of the reactivity of the 1,4-biradical intermediates.
