The syntheses of cyclohepta[<I>cd</I>]phenalen-6-one (<B>8</B>) and the cyclohepta[<I>cd</I>]phenalenium tetrafluoroborate (<B>1</B>) are reported. As expected, it is apparent that in the transition from 10,11-dihydrocyclohepta[<I>cd</I>]phenalen-6-one to the fully conjugated ketone <B>8</B>, all the vinyl protons move downfield by 0.22 to 0.53 ppm. The plausible explanation suggests that these shifts arise from deshielding due to the existence of a diamagnetic ring current induced in the 14π periphery of <B>8</B>. In accord with theoretical prediction, the cation <B>1</B> is extremely stable. The substantial thermodynamic stability of <B>1</B> is reflected to its p<I>K</I><SUB>R</SUB><SUP>+</SUP> of 8.4. The ion 1 can be regarded as a perturbed [15]annulenium ion weakly coupled with a localized central vinyl crosslink.
