The racemate of tetrahydroanhydroaucubigenone (<B>3</B>), one of the related compounds of aucubin, was synthesized by the photoirradiation of 6-[2-(nitrosooxy)ethyl]-3-oxabicyclo[3.3.0]octan-7-one. (±)-Tctrahydroanhydroaucubigenin was also obtained by reduction of (±)-<B>3</B> with sodium in moist ether.
