スピントラップ試薬として5,5-ジメチル-1-ピロリン1-オキシド(DMPO)を用いる電子スピン共鳴(ESR)スピントラップ法により, 60種類の植物由来漢方薬のスーパーオキシド(O2-)消去能が正確に決定された. このESR法におけるO2-源として, ジメチルスルホキシド中で酸素分子の一電子還元によって生成させたO2-を使用した. 測定の結果, 炎症, 血管疾病, および, 腫瘍に効果のある生薬の中に, 極めて強いO2-消去活性を示すものを見出した.
