Cell immunity in regional lymph nodes and peripheral blood was studied in patients with Stage III or IV cancer of the head and neck region who underwent neck dissection. The parameters of cell immunity (NK activity, LAK activity, CD3, 4, 8, CD4/8 ratio, CD57·CD16, CD11b·CD8) were examined in non-tumor-involved regional lymph nodes and peripheral blood. The results revealed that the immunological activities of regional lymph nodes were different from those of peripheral blood. The number of NK cells, NK activity and LAK activity were lower, while the number of CD4 positive cells and CD4/8 ratio were higher in regional lymph nodes than in peripheral blood. In comparison with peripheral blood, regional lymph nodes were depleted of cytotoxic effector cells with low cytotoxic activities, and rich in helper T lymphocyte. LAK cells derived from non-tumorinvolved regional lymph node cells had low cytotoxic activities.
