A 57-year-old female with diabetes mellitus had sudden onset of sensorineural hearing loss of the right ear without vertigo. She had developed deafness of the left ear soon after total thyroidectomy at 42 years of age. Hearing of low tones by the right ear was improved by corticosteroid administration. Because diabetes mellitus is aggravated by corticosteroids, she was given insulin injections to control blood sugar during steroid therapy.A "Kampo" prescription, Saiboku-Toh, was useful in decreasing the dosage of corticosteroid.
