Twenty five cases of head and neck hemangioma are reviewed. These patients were treated at Kitasato University from 1971 to 1984.Histopathological examination revealed capillary hemangiomas (15 cases), cavernous hemangiomas (9 cases) and venous hemangioma (1 case). Capillary hemangiomas were found on the tongue and in the nasal cavity, and cavernous hemangiomas were found in the submandible and buccal subcutaneous tissue.The majority of the patients with cavernous hemangiomas were teenagers. Capillary hemangiomas were found in the fifth and sixth decades. There were no sexual difference.Five patients had phlebolithiasis in the subcutaneous tissue of the neck and cheek. The total number of hemangiomas in these regions was eight in this series, a higher incidence than in previous reports. Histopathologically, these five cases of phlebolithiasis were cavernous hemangiomas.Our experience with these cases confirms that soft X-ray examination is useful in the diagnosis of phlebolithiasis.
