This report calls attention to MEN IIB, with special reference to life threatening complications. MEN is classified into three subtypes; Type I, Type IIA, and Type IIB. Type IIB is the rarest, and the present case is the 15th to be reported in the Japanese literature. Thyroid carcinoma, pheochromocytoma, and neuroma are included in this syndrome. As MEN IIB is known to be a complication of medullary carcinoma of the thyroid and as the tumor tends to metastatize aggressively in its early stage, the early diagnosis of MEN JIB is essential. Oral neuroma is usually the initial sign of this type, as in the present case. The authors stress that early detection of oral neuroma and close follow-up by checking the serum calcitonin would save patients with this syndrome. This is the first case to be reported of MEN IIB with hemifacial hypertrophy.
