This paper reports the effects of cultivar and packaging with cabbages, maturity with brussels sprouts, posture with japanese radish seedlings, delay of cooling with rape flowers and bearing part and maturity with broccolies on the storability of these commodities.
1) Cabbage ; 5 cv of cabbages packed by paper and without packaging lost their market value due to wilting, while the materials packed by perforated polyethlene bag (ppb) lost the market value due to decay by infection of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (Scle. scle.) during storage at 20°C. Shelf life of "YR Kiyokaze" and "YR Goju-go" was short and that of "YR Irako" was longest during storage at 20°C. On the other hand, during storage at 2°C, "YR Gojugo" and "YR Kiyokaze" packed by ppb deteriorated mainly due to decay by Scle. scle., and "YR Kyoryoku wase-ohgosho" packed by paper or ppb, and also without packaging deteriorated due to black spots around rib. Others lost their market value due to wilting. Shelf life of "YR Irako" packed by ppb was longest extending to about 2 months.
2) Brussels sprouts ; Shelf life of large heads, middle heads, and small heads was25 days, 27 days, and 30 days respectively, during storage at 2°C. At 20°C, shelf life of large heads was also shortest, and that of small heads was longest. Storage of heads attached to stalk prolonged the sheif life with 3 sizes of heads duting storage at 2°C, as compared to the heads detached from stalk.
3) Japanese radish seedling ; Whether holding posture is standing or laying did not affect the whole marketable period of japanese radish seedling showing 19 days at 2°C and 3 days at 20°C. But, holizontally laid materials were inferior in quality to standed one since their hypocotyls curved at early period in storage both 2°C and 20°C.
4) Rape flower ; Shelf life of rape flowers was 3 days at 20°C and 18 days at 2°C. Delay of cooling for 20 hours shortened the shelf life by 10 days at 20°C.
5) Broccoli ; There was little effect of bearing part and maturity of flower buds on storabilty at 20°C, and all flower buds lost market value within 4-5 days storage at 20°C. Shelf life of lateral flower buds was longer than that of terminal flower buds and that of tight buds was longer than slightly loose buds to 2°C.
