Acute rupture of the lateral ligament of the ankel.

A total of 12 patients with acute ruptures of the lateral ligaments of the ankle are reported. In this series, 10 cases were treated with primary suture. We have attempted to evaluate arthrography as an aid in diagnosis of the cases that are not readily diagnosed by clinical and stress roentgenographic examination. In recent tears of the lateral collateral ligaments of the ankle, lateral leakage of contrast medium could be seen on arthrogram. And in 5 of the 10 treated surgically, extravasation of contrast medium to the tendon sheath of the peroneus muscle was demonstrated. 8 patients of the 10 treated surgically were operated within 10 days after injury, and had the best results. People with acute rupture of the lateral ligaments and especially young active sportmen and women, who required an absolutely stable ankle, ought to be offered early primary suture of the ligaments.
