A Case Report of Septic Arthritis of the Shoulder in an Infant.

Septic arthritis of the shoulder in infants is a rare disease. Most reports of this disease are confined to studies with a short period of follow-up. In this paper we present one case whom we have followed for a period of three years and seven months. The patient was an eight-month-old girl whose first symptom was fever, after which her mother noticed that she seldom moved her right upper arm. The next day they visited a paediatric clinic but despite medication her symptoms did not markedly subside. Ten days after onset of symptoms they visited the paediatric department of our hospital The patient was treated with medication and after thirty five days from onset of symptoms aspiration was done. At follow-up of two years and five months she had recovered full range of motion but after two years and eleven months arm length discrepancy of 1.5cm was noted and this has not changed during the last eight months of follow-up. We suspected that osteomyelitis at the proximal metaphysis invaded the epiphyseal plate and caused the patient's arm length discrepancy. Roentgenographic findings of the right humerus did not change. Our report investigates the after effects of septic arthritis in children with particular emphasis on range of motion, roentgenographic findings, and arm length discrepancy.
