Radiographic Follow-up of Physiological Genu Varum in Childhood.

We studied physiological genu varum radiographically in two groups of children. We treated the first group of children (86 cases, 172 limbs) with lateral wedged high top shoes for an average of 12 months. We only observed the second group (52 cases, 104 limbs) who received no treatment for an average of 12 months. We measured the following angles radiographically and compared them between the two groups; (1) distal metaphyseal diaphyseal angle of femur (FDMDA), (2) femorotibial angle (FTA), (3) proximal metaphyseal diaphyseal angle of tibia (TPMDA), and (4) distal metaphyseal duaphyseal angle of tibia (TDMDA). Each angle in both groups developed with age. The change of FTA was particularly influenced by both FDMDA and TPMDA angle changes. We found no significant difference between the changes of angles in both groups of children, and therefore feel the treatment with lateral wedged high top shoes had no effect on the development of physiological genu varum in childhood.
