Nep formation and trash removal from flats have been investigated in an effort to see how the cleaning action of a card can be improved.<BR>The mechanisms of nep formation and trash removal from flats were assumed . Then the effects of various factors in operating a card on the cleaning action were estimated by the above assumptions and the basic elements, and these estimates were confirmed by experimental data.<BR>Nep formed on flats increased and trash removed from flats decreased with time after stripping on a card equipped with wire fillet clothing. Metallic card clothing has been found to be preferable to wire fillet clothing in these lines. The rise in the production rate or the increase in flat-cylinder setting is poor. Selecting a tooth angle combination of metallic card clothing mounted on the cylinder and the dof fer so as to increase the fiber transfer ratio from the cylinder to the doffer is desirable. An increase in the cylinder speed is recommendable for increasing cleaning efficiency.
