Application of Metallic Card Clothing to Cotton Processing:Part 3 : Effects of Lap Feeding Rate

By feeding a metallic card with cotton laps for 20 's yarns at feeding rates ranging from 12.6 to 59.1 1b/h, the behaviors of waste, impurities and staple length were analyzed an detail. The results are : 1) Web delivery increased with the feeding rate due to the decrease of licer-in fly percentage to input. Flat strip percentage tended to decrease very slowly. 2) Total neps and nep density in web increased proportionally to the feeding rate up to 20 1b/h and then increased more rapidly. It may be assumed that earlly all n s are produced on the cylinder surface, particularly under flats. 3) The total amount of naps increased at a very slow rate and nap removal from both the licker-in fly and the flat strips decreased with the feeding rate ; therefore naps increased in the web. 4) More than half the total trash was removed from the licker-in fly and only a all fraction was absorbed by the flat strips at the regular feeding rate. Since the total trash tended to decrease and the trash removal decreased only slightly with the feeding rate trash in the web changed negligibly. 5) At the regular feeding rate, fiber breakage ocurred only moderately and was compensated for by the short fiber removal to waste. When the feeding rate was raised, the staple length of the web decreased due to the increase of fiber breakage and the decrease of selective removal of short fibers into waste.
