Social capital and social communication in Japan:Analysis on survey data on political participation before and during the General Election 2000

Conceptual issues on social capital are discussed, and a theoretical extension from the viewpoint of social network study is attempted. Then, using Japan's nationwide-sampling panel survey in 2000 that includes snowball-sampled data, extended social capital hypotheses are examined. The data contained information on daily political participation, as well as that of the election period. The analyses showed a clear support for a positive relationship between the amount of social capital and political participation, both on the individual and the aggregate levels. The results provide evidence which allows theoretical extension that daily interactions among citizens provide a plentiful resource for political communication, which in turn works as social capital in Japan. Some negative sides of Japanese social capital are also discussed in accordance with the data.
