As exploratory studies for antirads, NR-sulfur vulcanizates containing various kinds of rubber chemicals which were considered to be useful for anti-rads were irradiated with Co-60 gamma rays. Comparison of some mechanical properties, i.e., stress at 100%, tensile strength, elongation and JIS-hardness of the irradiated samples with those of the unirradiated samples was chosen as measure of deterioration by irradiation. Determination of physical properties of vulcanizates with or without an antirad indicates the effectiveness of antirad. The following results were obtained.(1) Vulcanizates containing no antirad was deteriorated by irradiation from 5×107 to 1×108γ.(2) Little difference in changes of stress at 100% was observed between irradiation in air and that in nitrogen in the case of vulcanizates containing antirad, but a little difference was observed in the case of vulcanizates containing no antirad.(3) Vulcanizates containing some antirads were a little more resistant than the control, but clear-cut relationship was not obtained between chemical structure and anti-radiation capacity of antirad.
