Carbohydrate components were examined in hot water-soluble polysaccharides of the mother corm, first cormel and second cormel of Satoimo during tuberization and development. The extracted hot water-soluble polysaccharides were fractionated by Sepharose 6B column (1.5×80cm) chromatography. The elution profiles and the carbohydrate compositions of polysaccharides fractionated by column chromatography were compared. The extracted polysaccharide from the mother corm produced three fractions by column chromatography. The proportion of polysaccharide fractionated in the small molecular weight fraction, which consist of glucose, increased during tuberization and development. The first cormel polysaccharide was mostly obtained in the intermediate molecular weight fraction, of which the carbohydrate composition was galacturonic acid and glucose. The elution profiles were not changed much through tuberization and development. The second cormel polysaccharide was composed of that fractionated in the large molecular weight fraction, of which the carbohydrate composition was mainly galactose, glucose and galacturonic acid. The elution profiles were not changed through tuberization and development.
