On the utilization of levulinic acid by microorganisms, only a few studies using yeasts have been reported. So we studied the isolation of levulinic acid-utilizing microorganisms. About 200 strains of bacteria and 4 strains of yeasts were isolated from 300 kinds of samples such as soils, sewages and foods by enriched culture in the media containing levulinic acid as a sole source of carbon. Stock cultures of Noda Industrial Science Laboratory (NISL) were also tested. Bacteria which can utilize levulinic acid efficiently were identified with Corynebacterium equi, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Pseudomonas desmolytica and Brevibacterium linens. The capacity of utilization of levulinic acid were examined for some bacteria stocked in Institute of Applied Microbiology (IAM) and Institute for Fermentation (IFO), in which Arthrobacter simplex IAM 1650, Corynebacterium equi IAM 1038, Pseudomonas aeruginosa IAM 1007, Pseudomonas aeruginosa IFO 3080, Pseudomonas desmolytica IAM 1508, and Pseudomonas desmolytica IFO 12570 were found to utilize levulinic acid as a sole source of carbon.
