1. Comparison was made on the starch formation in leaves from various sugars snd glucose-l-phosphate. 2. Formation of starch from glucose-l-phosphate proceeds in the absence of respiration. Starchformation from sugars, however, must be coupled with respiration. 3. Among the various sugars tested, sucrose, maltose, glucose, fructose, and galactose were excellent material for starch formation. 4. The effects of pH and concentrations of salts of the solution were tested. It was found that the formation of starch was not significantly affected between pH values of 5.8_??_7.7. Greater concentrations of salts had markedly inhibiting effect on the formation of starch. 5. It was suggested that the energy necessary for the phosphorylation reaction of sugars would be obtained from the coupled respiration in the leaves.
