Indication of transcatheter arterial embolization in hepatocellular carcinoma with liver cirrhosis evaluated from the liver function tests.

Thirty eight patients with hepatocellular carcinoma complicating liver cirrhosis were subjected to the transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) therapy. Gelfoam sponge was used as embolic materials. These patients were separated into two groups, i.e. hepatic failure group, who died within one month after TAE, and long survival group, who survived for more than six months after TAE. Twelve liver function tests and six blood laboratory examinations were selected and compared each other between these two groups firstly, and then the indication of TAE was evaluated by means of regression analysis. As a results, no significant differences were seen in six blood laboratory findings, but the serum bilirubin, ICG, albumin levels and the pattern of OGTT showed significant differences in twelve liver function data. It was clarified that the indication of TAE in hepatocellular carcinoma with liver cirrhosis is mainly affected by the serum bilirubin, ICG, gamma globulin levels and the pattern of OGTT.
