The effects on serum GPT activity of treatment of obesity by reducing diets were studied in 9 male obese subjects showing more than 15% over ideal body weight (bw).1) The mode of changes in serum GPT activity after caloric restriction was divided into two groups. The one showed a transient increase in serum GPT activity during the first two weeks after caloric restriction (a transiently increased group), the other a gradual decrease in serum GPT activity (a gradually decreased group).2) The energy intake was significantly less in the transiently increased group (10.2±1.4kcal/day/percent ideal bw*) than in the gradually decreased group (13.8±1.8kcal/day/percent ideal bw).3) The mean weight loss during 4 weeks after caloric restriction was significantly more in the transiently increased group (0.38±0.04%/day as percent ideal bw, 210±40g/day as actual bw) than in the gradually decreased group (0.16±0.05% /day, 100±27g/day, respectively). This shows that obese patients develop a transient elevation of serum GPT activity during the first two weeks of rigid dieting.*Percent ideal bw was calculated according to the followings; a patient's bw(kg)/ideal bw(kg)×100.
