In the usual silver absorption method, the stationary furnace packed with platinum combustion catalyst is heated to about 800°C, converting the major part of the sulfur contained to sulfur dioxide.
In order to promote the absorption of sulfur dioxide into silver, preliminary oxidation into sulfur trioxide was intended and performed by an insertion of a platinum oxidation furnace.
As an example sulfamic acid was burned using the furnaces shown in Table I. The effect of temperature of the platinum contact was shown in Figs. 13. When the silver wire was used as an absorbent and the platinum contact was heated at 600800°C, the lower values were obtained, the greater the sample weight was. Using the platinum contact maintained at a relatively low temperature, it was concluded that the acceptable range of the silver method using the silver wool could be extended, and the appropriate temperature for the platinum contact was 400500°C. Using the furnace and the silver wool as shown in Fig. 4 and the procedures described in previous report, sulfur in several organic compounds was determined (Table III). Maintaining the temperature of silver at 390410°C, sulfur in 37mg of sample was determined accurately when more than 1 gram of silver wool were used (Tables IIIII).
