Fundamental requirements for masking Al3+ and Ti4+ in an alkaline solution of sulfosalicylic acid and the separation of each ion from the masking solution have been investigated. A satisfactory result was obtained by boiling a masking solution of pH above 9.4 to hydrolyze, Ti4+, and then recovering the Ti4+ as TiO2.2H2O and the Al3+ in the filtrate as an oxinate. In the case of a large amount of Ti4+ as compared with Al3+, it was necessary to repeat the hydrolysis of Ti4+. In the separation of Ti4+ and Fe3+ by the use of sulfosalicylic acid, masking of these ions was effected by the use of alkaline sulfosalicylic acid, solution, and the difference in the propensity for forming complex salt possessed by these ions was utilized for their analysis. A satisfactory result was obtained by treating the masking solution with (NH4) 2S for separating and recovering Fe3+ as an iron sulfide, and then by boiling the filtrate containing Ti4+ complex salt for the separation of Ti4+. In the case of a large amount of Ti4+ as compared with Fe3+, good results were obtained by reprecipitation.<BR>Separation of Al3+ and Fe3+ masked by the use of an alkaline solution of sulfosalicylic acid has been investigated, and good results were obtained by treating the solution with (NH4)2S for separating and recovering Fe3+ as iron sulfide. The Al3+ in the filtrate was then separated as an oxinate. In the case of a large amount of Fe3+ as compared with Al3+, good results were obtained by reprecipitation. Also, it was found that the presence of S2- had no effect on the separation of Al3+ by the oxin method. In the separation of Mg2+ and Al3+ on an alkaline masking solution, the oxin method was applied to the masking solution of sulfosalicylic acid. The masking solution was made weakly acid, Al 3+ was precipitated as an oxinate, and Mg ixinate was recovered from the filtrate. The amount of sulfosalicylic acid used in this separation had no relation to the percentage recovery of these ions. The phosphate method was also tested for the separation, but the result was not satisfactory.
