The masking of metallic ions in alkaline solution by the formation of complex salts of hydroxycarbonic acid and the metallic ions, the separation of a metallic ion by application of its masking action, and a comparative study on the relationship between the masking action and various properties of the complex salts have been carried out. In these experiments, efforts were directed towards finding the necessary conditions for masking, separating, and recovering from the complex salts of sulfosalicylic acid, and Al<SUP>3+</SUP>, Fe<SUP>3+</SUP>, and Ti<SUP>4+</SUP> in their alkaline solution. The result are summarized as follows: (1). The amount of sulfosalicylic acid required for sufficient masking was more than three times as much as indicated by the molar ratio but the amount varied with the concentration of ions, pH, and temperature Discussions were made on these effects, (2). The best method for separating and recovering (demasking) the ions was the oxine method for Al<SUP>3+</SUP>, the FeS method for Fe<SUP>3+</SUP>, and the hydrolytic method for Ti<SUP>4+</SUP>.
