Blue-green precipitate is formed by the reaction of isonicotinic acid hydrazide (INAH) and Cu<SUP>2+</SUP> at pH 4. 34. 4. The precipitate is filtered washed with 0.1% solution of INAH of pH 4. 4, taken up in dilute HCI, the Cu is precipitated as CuS, heated at high temperature and determined as CuO. The reaction of Hg<SUP>2+</SUP> and INAH gives a precipitate, 2 C<SUB>6</SUB>H<SUB>7</SUB>ON<SUB>3</SUB>· 3 Hg (NO<SUB>3</SUB>) <SUB>2</SUB>, at about pH 4. 8, the precipitate is washed with the foregoing washing solution, taken up in dilute HCI, separated as HgS and it is determined by the usual method. In case of Cd<SUP>2+</SUP>, it gives a precipitate of Cd -complex salt in the pH range of 4. 44. 5 and it is determined as CdS but this method is not highly recommendable. Attempts have been made to make separate determinations of Hg<SUP>2+</SUP>, Cu<SUP>2+</SUP> and Cd<SUP>2+</SUP> by use of EDTA and tripolyphosphate as masking agents but the results were unsatisfactory.
