The extraction of nickel as dithizone complex into carbontetrachloride was studied for concentrations of hydrogen ion, dithizone, citrate ion, ammonium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide, and for an adequate shaking period for extraction. The results obtained were as follows : (1) The rate of extraction was so slow in the pH range 17, that the most prominent factor for the extractability might be considered to be the extraction rate rather than to be the equilibrium constant. (2) The per cent extraction was low in the presence of 0.30.8<I>M</I> citrate ion at pH8.5. (3) The effect of the concentration of dithizone on the rate of extraction was considerably large.<BR>The extraction constant (analytical) of nickel was calculated by using saturated dithizone in carbontetrachloride and 20μg nickel in 2 hours shaking at pH1.0, the value obtained being 2×10<SUP>2</SUP> which was equal as that for zinc and one third of that for cobalt. Nickel and cobalt were eluted from the alumina column of 0.7× 5cm using chloroform as an eluant and separated from zinc and copper.<BR>The amount of nickel was obtained by measuring the absorbances at 605mμ and 670mμ, simultaneously. 0.55μg of nickel could be determined by the proposed method.
