Minute amounts of manganese, cobalt, copper, and zinc in nickel could be separated by a simple paper chromatographic method, and also determined semiquantitatively by means of the dilution method. Various mixed solvents, consisting of acetone and hydrochloric acid, were employed in order to find a suitable mixture for each metal ion. Other conditions, such as the acidity of the sample solution, and the developing time, were also examined, and it was found that the colored spot area was in proportion to the logarithum of the amount of metal ion present in the spot. With the most sensitive coloring agent for each metal ion, the limit of identification of the metal was estimated by the dilution method; a semiquantitative determination of the metal was achieved by diluting the sample solution to the limit. This method could be applied to the determination of impurities in reagent grade nickel metal, and nickel chloride. Particularly good results were obtained in the case of cobalt impurities, as the estimated values agreed well with those obtained by spectrophotometry.
