Gas chromatography of fatty acid amides, mainly of lower fatty acids, were studied.<BR>Polymer beads column (Porapak Q) was found to be suitable to lower amides (up to C<SUB>5</SUB> amide). Due to their longer retension times, however, limited results were obtained for higher homologues. By employing phosphoric acid for the reaction column, and raising the operating temperature higher than 200°C, <I>N</I>-unsubstituted amides were dehydrated to corresponding nitriles which have shorter <I>t</I><SUB>R</SUB> values than amides. Accordingly, a combination of a phosphoric acid column and a polymer beads column enabled to detect amides of wider range (up to C<SUB>8</SUB> amides). As <I>N</I>-alkyl substituted amides were eluted unaltered from the reaction column, the characterization of amides could also be made with this combined column. Conversion ratios for quantitative treatments were satisfactory on butyr-, valer-, and capronamides. Yields of lower amides, however, were a little less than those of higher homologues.<BR>Separation of <I>N</I>-phenyl substituted amides was successful with the column of high vacuum silicone grease, although polymer beads absorbed these compounds completely.
