A new data for the determination of free fatty acids in unbleached kraft paper has been described. This method is based on extraction with organic solvents, esterification with methanol-borontrifluoride and gas chromatography. The free fatty acids were extracted with trichlene and subsequently converted to methyl esters with methanol-borontrifluoride. The methyl esters were separated on a 3.0 m × 4 mm column packed with 5 wt% diethyleneglycol succinate coated on Chromosorb W (6080 mesh) at 200°C and a 3.0 m × 4 mm column packed with 5 wt% silicone DC 550 coated on Chromosorb W (6080 mesh) at 230°C.<BR>The gas chromatograms were obtained using a Shimazu GC-IB gas Chromatograph equipped with hydrogen flame ionization detecter.<BR>By this method, both saturated and unsaturated fatty acids of C<SUB>8</SUB>C<SUB>20</SUB> could be separated and determined on the reproducible and symmetric peaks at the column temperature of 200230°C.<BR>For the determination of free fatty acids in unbleached kraft paper, this method was found to be applicable with precision of the order of 10% of free fatty acids: in the unbleached kraft paper.
