The authors studied about the distribution and relation between fibrinogen, βlipoprotein and fat droplets in the early phase of human aortic atherosclerosis. The results obtained are as follows : 1) In normal aortic intima : Extracellular fibrillar fat is observed near and along internal elastic fibers. Fibrinogen and lipoprotein fluorescences have no relation with fat depositions. 2) In Grade I lesion (early cloudy thickening of intima) : Fibrinogen and βlipoprotein are diffusely distributed in the upper layer of intima but extracellular fat is observed in the deeper layer of intima. 3) In Grade II lesion : Extracellular amorphous lipid deposition is present along the borderline between original intima and organized mural thrombus. Fibrinogen is diffusely distributed throughout the organized thrombus. βLipoprotein fluorescence is weaker than that of fibrinogen. 4) The fatty streak is composed of accumulation of foamy cells, but fibrinogen and lipoprotein closely correspond with deposition of extracellular lipid. These results suggested that plasma protein and lipid, especially extracellular lipid, play an important role in developement of atherosclerosis.
