Endothelial cells of canine femoral vein in cell culture were performed. They have two morphological types in early stage, the one polygonal sheet-arrangement of "typical" endothelial cells and the other spindle fasciculat-ing arrangement of "atypical" ones. And the cloning of "typical" endo-thelium was performed and they all showed elongated fasciculating pattern with time. And the more times the cells were subcultured, the more spind-ly the cells changed. The intercellular jnnctional processes and gaps, numerous pinocytotic vesicles, and microvilli were seen on scanning electron microscope. Rod-shaped tubular body, the macula occludens type of intercellular junction, pinocytotic vesicles, mitochondria, and myofilaments were observed on transmission electron microscope. The immunof luorescent observation indicated that cultured endothelial cells have myofilaments as contractile elements and it was smooth muscle actomyosin in character. That is, the endothelium has an contractability.
