REYE SYNDROME: PATHOGENESIS OF ENCEPHALOPATHY IN THE INITIAL STAGE NOT RELATED TO LIVER DAMAGE

In a patient with Reye syndrome in whom the occurrence of liver histology characteristic of the syndrome was confirmed by biopsy, evidence of liver damage was absent when the patient developed encephalopathy at the initial stage and it emerged in the later stage. This observation is suggestive of the pathogenesis of encephalopathy not related to liver damage at least in the initial stage in this patient . Thus, it appears possible that (an) etiologic factor (s) may involve the liver and the brain (and possibly several other systems as well) monistically, causing pathologic process in each organ, although it is very likely that toxic factor (s) produced as a consequence of liver damage also may contribute to pathogenesis of the brain disease in Reye syndrome.
