Experimental infection of hepatitis delta virus in a hepatitis B carrier chimpanzee.

For the purpose to investigate the relationship between delta antigen (Ag) and hepatitis B virusassociated Ags in the serum and liver tissue, superinfection of delta virus to a hepatitis B carrier chimpanzee was performed. The chimpanzee developed severe hepatitis with an abrupt rise in GPT values (503 KU) at 5 weeks after inoculation. Delta Ag appeared at 4 to 5 weeks in the serum post inoculation. By immunoperoxidase staining, delta Ag was localized mainly in the hepatocellular nuclei since just before the elevation of serum GPT until 7 weeks after inoculation. Delta Ag was also recognized sometimes on the endoplasmic reticulum of the hepatocyte by immunoelectron microscopy. Coexistence of HBsAg and delta Ag was rarely found in the same hepatocytes. During the period ofdelta appearance, the amount of HBcAg in the liver tissue and the titer of HBsAg in the serum were decreased. In addition, conventional electron microscopic examination showed peculiar cytoplasmic tubular structures in the hepatocytes similar to those seen in non-A, non-B hepatitis.
