A case report of hepatocellular carcinoma who has survived for 10 years.

A 62-year-old woman with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) who had survived for 10 years and 8 months was reported. She was admitted to our hospital because of increased serum alpha-fetoprotein on October, 1973. Serum HBsAg and HBeAg were both positive. On December, 1973, the tumor was successfully resected from the right posterior superior segment of the liver, and its size was 3.5cm in diameter. Histological examination of the surgical specimen showed HCC with posthepatitic liver cirrhosis. Approximately 7 years later, second operation for the recurrence of HCC was performed on November, 1980. Third operation for the recurrence was performed on September, 1981. The tumor size was 2.0cm and 1.0cm in diameter, respectively. On May, 1983, transarterial embolization for the recurrence was performed and she still survive. We suspected that the development of HCC in this case resulted from multicentric occurrence of the tumor.
