The effect of Pre-operative hepatic arterial embolization on regenerating liver after hepatic resection.

Transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) through the hepatic artery was done before 68% partial hepatectomy in rats and influence of TAE on regenerating liver was assessed. Embolization was performed with Gelfoam powder or albumin microspheres in combination with or without Mitomycin-C. TAE caused remarkable elevation in SGOT and SGPT levels, which returned to the normal on the 3rd post-treatment day. No obvious changes of regenerating liver weights was found after partial hepatectomy. Microscopic observation of the hepatectomized liver with the pre-treatment of TAE revealed focal necrosis with mild cellular infiltration around the embolized arterioles. DNA-synthesis after partial hepatectomy was severely inhibited by preoperative TAE, especially by the embolization with Mitomycin-C. Survival rate for the partial hepatectomized rats with chemoembolization was lower than that with hepatic arterial ligation. Pre-operative TAE is demonstrated to have severe inhibitory effects on hepatic regeneration after partial hepatectomy.
