We studied the clinicopathological course of type C chronic hepatitis using dye dispersing method under laparoscopy, comparing with type B chronic hepatitis. The subjects were 263 of type C chronic hepatitis cases including 74 of follow-up cases. Findings of dye pooling were classified into four stages. Small dye pools were frequently observed during the early stage of type C hepatitis, which indicated the area with relatively severe inflammation. Laparoscopic examination was very useful for the diagnosis of such localized findings. Dye pools increased gradually to make partial connections following the course of progression that takes longer time than type B hepatitis. This progression pattern in type C hepatitis describes the irregular distribution of inflammatory area such as localized reddish marking or scarring which has been reported as characteristics of type C hepatitis. We conclude that type C hepatitis gradually progress to liver cirrhosis showing irregular distribution of active inflammation, which may be detected correctly by dye dispersing laparoscopy.
