To two groups of sexually mature albino rats maintained on a palmitic acid diet and a linoleic acid diet respectively, C14-labelled radioactive cholesterol was administered for three days and various tissue samples (liver, serum, blood clot, muscle, kidneys, brain and brain) obtained from these animals at daily intervals from the day following start of labelled cholesterol administration onward were assayed for specific radioactivity of cholesterol. The assay results obtained indicated practically the same degrees of decline to take place with the specific radioactivities of both hepatic and serum choles-terols. By contrast, the specific activity of cholesterol in the blood clot was re-markably higher on day 1 of administration in animals on a linoleic acid diet than in those on a palmitic acid diet, and further elevated on the following day in the former group. With other organs studied, such significant difference could not be noted between the two different diet groups. All these findings has suggested more active transfer of cholesterol in the serum to erythrocytes in animals fed a linoleic acid diet than that in rats sup-plied with a palmitic acid diet.It thus is highly probable that the event serves as a factor influencing the serum cholesterol level.
