An observation about the height and weight of 374 college women and their parents was made. The weights are expressed as percent deviation from the standard weight. Results obtained are as follows.1. There was statistically significant correlation for weight between father and mother, although no significant correlation for height was found. This finding strongly suggests the importance of environmental factors in the occurrence of obesity.2. There were highly significant correlations for height between both parents and daughter, while a slightly significant correlation for weight was found only between mother and daughter.3. In the families engaged in selling foods, there were significant more obese daughters.4. On the basis of these findings, it is concluded that height is strongly influenced by genetic predisposition, while the adult weight is considerably in fluenced by acquired environmental factors.
