Based on the isotope separation effect reported in the preceding paper, a conceptual model of turbo isotope separator was designed and constructed, with which measurements were made on the degree of separation obtainable therewith, using Ar isotopes as work-ing medium. The mechanism of separation relevant to a multistage turbo-machine is discussed, based on which the separation factor is calculated assuming molecular flow. On the experimental machine, for four alternative arrangements of blades and rotors, the separation factor and pressures at key positions were measured as function of feed rate, with the machine speed varied from 10, 000 rpm to 13, 000 rpm. The measured values of separation factor agreed fairly well with calculation at very low feed rates. With increasing feed rate, however, the measured separation factor fell off, despite increase in the separative work up to a certain optimum feed rate. The characteristics of the separator are discussed, and an indication is given concerning possible further improve-ment.
