Immunohistochemical study of carcinoembryonic antigen and SPan-1 antigen in colorectal cancer.

The distribution and location of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and SPan-1 antigen were studied using immunoperoxidase method in 74 colorectal cancers. Percentage of positive CEA and SPan-1 staining were 73.0 % (54/74 cases) and 68.9 % (51/74 cases), respectively. The distribution of antigen was classified to apical type and cytoplasmic type. While 31 cases were apical type and 23 cases were cytoplasmic type in CEA staining, 7 cases were apical type and 44 cases were cytoplasmic type in SPan-1 staining. Histologically, the positive staining rates of CEA were 77.3 % in well differentiated adenocarcinomas, 78.3 % in moderately differentiated adenocarcinomas and 0 % in mucinous carcinomas and the positive rates of SPan-1 staining were 65.9 % in well differentiated carcinomas, 78.3 % in moderately differentiated adenocarcinomas and 100 % in mucinous carcinomas. Although the positive rates of CEA staining did not correlate with the Dukes' staging classification, those of SPan-1 were parallel to the advance disease.
