Evaluation of angiography for the development of colorectal cancer with reference to microangiography.

Ninety-eight patients with colorectal cancers operated on since 1975 in our department were subjected to selective angiography. Fifty-one surgical resected specimens were used for microangiographic study. The microangiographic findings of the tumors were compared with those of histopathology and selective angiography.<BR>The findings obtained with microangiography correlated well with the histological observations, and vascular changes in the colorectal wall almost coincided with tumor invasion.<BR>Vascular disarray with histological necrotic foci and changes of vascularity within the tumor were often recognized when the cancer cells infiltrated over the proper muscle layer. An abrupt and/or irregular appearance of the peripheral vessels supplying blood to the tumor were observed in the protruded type of tumor rather than in the ulcerative type. These findings obtained with microangiography agreed well with those of preoperative selective angiography, and the correlation with the degree of tumor invasion was discussed with reference to histopathological findings.
