The rabbit hairs were studied microscopically on their form of the cross-section and differences in granular pigments among six classifications of the hair color; Black, Havana Rex (chocolate), socalled Golden, Chinchilla, Wild (black and yellow mixed) and White. Both the guard hairs and the underfur were imbedded in celloidin-paraffin, cross-sectioned, mounted in the usual way and unstained. They were examined compared with the same types of hairs immersed in glycerin. The results are summarized as follows: 1) The connection between the cortical and medullary regions can be compared to the construction of the bamboo. 2) The widened portion near the tip of the guard hair is dumb-bell-shaped. 3) Pigment granules are abundant in the parenchymatous septa which are found between the medullary vacuoles, and less in the cortex. 4) Hair colors may be expressed by the tint and the distribution of pigment granules. 5) Both the Chinchilla and the Wild have a light colored middle portion between the distal and proximal dark colored portions. In the Chinchilla the light portion contains none or a small quantity of black granules which are found in the dark portion, but in the Wild the light portion contains granules with thin color tone.
