In order to study the effect of noise stress on immune response, Wister rats were exposed to 100 decibel noise stimulation daily for 4 h and immune responsiveness was estimated by plasma corticosteroid level, antibody production to sheep red blood cells, and lymphocyte subsets in thymus and spleen. A significant decrease in plasma corticosteroid level and enhancement of antibody production were observed after the onset of noise stress. Decrease in CD4^-/CD8^- (double negative) immature cells in the thymus and increase in CD4^+/CD8^- (helper type) mature cells in both thymus and spleen were also observed, suggesting that activation of helper T cell differentiation in thymus occurred in the stressed rats. These resuits indicate that immune responses were enhanced by the noise stress used in the present study.
