The role played by the fibrinolytic enzymes in blood circulation is well established. However, extravascular fibrinolysis has been observed in physiological and pathophysiological condition in the various organs. In this article the role of fibrinolytic enzymes in ovulation with regard to the rupture of the follicle and the significance of tissue type plasminogen activator (t-PA) derived from the granulosa cell is reviewed. It was clarified that two distinct PAs (t-PA, u-PA) and plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI) were related to oyulation and the relationship between PAs and PAI was an important factor in ovulation. In addition, it was shown that gonadotropin and gonadotropin releasing hormone were closely related to the appearance of t-PA and PAI. It was emphasized that the fibrinolytic enzyme in the extravascular tissue played an important role in tissue remodelling, angiogenesis and repair besides ovulation.
