1) The provenance trial has been made by the larch studists in japanese universities in 1974, at just year, fortunately, the larch seed crops were heavy at all localities of natural larch forest (Larix leptdepis Gord). The aim of this trial is to show the provenance' s difference of the cone type and size, the number and weight of seeds per a cone which was collected from a few selected mother trees in nine provenances. And in addition, we examined about the growth rate of the I year seedlings. 2) Nine localities were designated as the representative provenances as shown in Fig. 1 andTable 1. covering whole range of larch distribution, namely, Mt. Umanokami (Miyagi prefeceure), the Nikko area (Tochigi prefecture), Mt. Asama (Nagano prefecture), Kamikochi (Nagano prefecture), around Yatsugatake mountains (Nagano prefecture), the Chichibu area (Saitama prefecture) and Mt. Fuji (Yamanashi prefecture). There were served five mother trees in one provenance and were thirty cones getting from one mother tree, and the total number of investigated seedlings in one provenances was about one hundred. 3) The conclusions about this trial showed the following : a) Provenances from the Nikko area and around Yatsugatake mountains appeared to be the best in the quality of cone (length, width and weight), while provenances from Mt. Umanokami, Mt. Fuji and Chichibu area to be inferior. There were significant difference among the mother trees about the quality of cone (length and weight), provenance from Mt. Asama was the largest in length, Otaki area the smallest in length and Kamikochi area, the smallest in weight. The correlation between the size (length and width) and weight of cone was very high. b) From the total number and weight of seeds contained in one cone, we observed that the provenances from Nikko area and Mt. Asama were very good and the provenances from Mt. Umanokami and Mt. Fuji were inferior, and a signifficant difference among mother trees from the provenances of Nikko area and Mt. Asama were very high, while the provenances from Mt. Umanokami and Mt. Fuji were very low. According to M. SIMAK, the value of T. G. W. (thousand grain weight) was more increasing on higher mountain districts than on lower districts, but in this trial, we could not find out it. c) In this trial, the germination percentage was remarkably low because we seemed mainly to be the reason that these seeds were retained without control condition of stored room, therfore we could not clearly showed that there was close correlation between the germination percentage and annual growth of seedlings. d) From the observation of annual growth of 1st seedlings which were sowed in the spring, we showed clearly that there was close correlation between the weight of seed and the annual growth of seedlings, and moreover, the provenances from Nikko area, Mt. Asama, Mt. Ontake, Otaki area and around the Yatsugatake mountain were more good growth, while the provenances from Mt. Umanokami, Kamikochi area, Chichibu area and Mt. Fuji were inferior. Mt. Umanokami was extremely inferior and already stopped the growth in June, and also we found significant difference between the mother tree growth in prove-nance from Mt. Asama.
