The authors examine the relationship between Job Characteristics (JC) and Organizational citizenship Behavior (OCB) by focusing on altruism and conscientiousness, which are primary dimensions of OCB. Findings from a study conducted on employees from Company A in Western Japan suggest that there are three positive effects of JC on OCB: 1) a positive relationship between skill variety of JC and altruism of OCB, 2) a positive relationship between task significance of JC and altruism and conscientiousness of OCB, and 3) a positive relationship between task identity and feedback from the job itself and conscientiousness of OCB. In addition, task significance of JC has a major role in facilitating of OCB. These findings support the explanation of HRM practices, including the effect JC has on employee attitudes and behavior. In particular, the results of our experiment clearly show that the role of JC in HRM research should be examined.
