In recent years, shipping industry is equipped with information technology. Related to maritime accident analysis, for example, accident report became published digitally, and tracks of the related ships may be captured by AIS. Our project team developed systems to utilize the digitalized accident reports and AIS data in order to understand accident characteristics in specific areas. We applied a text processing technique to extract accident features from the reports, which were difficult to be done before the report digitalization. Collision points and passed points on their way to there are extracted and stored in maritime accident database with other features written in the documents. In this project team, collisions that involved merchant ships at the entrance of Tokyo bay and around Nojimazaki are focused. The analysis of the collisions at the entrance of Tokyo bay showed several patterns of tracks, and calculation of collision risks with AIS data showed that ships frequently encounter each other in the same patterns in the same spots. The analysis of Nojimazaki area showed merchant ships collide with local fishing boats and pleasure fishing boats in good visibility, and with other merchant ships that encounter in head-on form in restricted visibility. Failures in navigation process are also analyzed, and according to the result, required system supports for major patterns of collisions are discussed.
