Toyokichi Harada (1860-1894) had been in Germany to study geology from 1874 to 1882. After his return from Austria at 1883, he held a position of a vice-director of the Imperial Japanese Geological Research and also was the first Japanese to become a professor of the Imperial University. Unfortunately, he resigned on the ground of tuberculosis till 1890. He published his principan works; Versuch einer geotektonischen Gliederung der japanischen Inseln (1888) and Die japanischen Inseln (1890), the latter was not completed. He entered into controversy with E. Naumann (1854-1927) on geotectonic history of the Japanese Islands. Harada's study clarified by the present author is as follows: (1) He divided the Japanese Islands into the North Japan arc and the South Japan arc by "Fuji-Zone", further with both arcs into the Outer zone and the Inner zone by "Medianlinie". Moreover, by "Krystallinen Kernzone" the Japan arc was divided into "aussere Sedimentzone" and "innere Sedimentzone". (2) He was the first to point out a fact that volcanic zones are running parallel with the Japan arc. He especially attached importance to two volcanic zones traversing the Japan arc; "Kirishima-Zone" and "Fuji-Zone". The former belongs to the Inner zone of the Ryukyu arc. This is in harmony with his theory that volcanic activities were vigorous in the inner side of mountain chains. While, the latter "Fuji-Zone" was only defined as volcanic zone extending to the Mariana Islands. (3) His geotectonic theory was incomplete in the sense that he could not consider systematically the relation between some vertical movements caused by the depression of Japan Sea and folding produced by lateral pressures.
